Reliability myths

" Disk drives typically have a much greater mean time between failure (MTBF) rating than tapes." This is a myth promulgated by disk drive vendors. Tapes typically have a lifetime of 50 years. I haven't heard of a disk drive with that kind of MTBF. If handled with just reasonable care, tapes rarely give errors. I speak from 15+ years of using tape for backups.
