I solved the missing "existing virtual desktops" in Step 3 by installing a virtual Windows 8 client. I was also prompted that it needed to be sysprep'ed, which I then did, and got the sysprep to shutdown the virtual machine once it finished generalizing it. Hope this helps (and I presume I did the right thing!).
