mklink on mapped drives

On LAPTOP mklink /D c:\a_scans       "c:\users\mxxxxx\pictures" so now the "directory" a_scans will point to my pictures (a_scans has been used for centuries on other machines and many things point that way). On DESKTOP (XP SP3), I map LAPTOP as T: I try to access T:\a_scans and I cannot. I can access T:\users\mxxxxx\pictures without problem.  I thought that mklink made a real directory entry. Is this a permanent problem, or will it go away if I change DESKTOP to Win 7? thanks
